Why Link Exchanges Are Like Mosquitoes

in the eyes of Google (and most other search engines, for that matter). A link exchange means more links for your site as well as theirs, more links leads to a higher Google PageRank, and a higher PageRank will cause a site to show up closer to the front page of Google search results, generating greater traffic for a site. Greater traffic means more ad revenue, fame, and the resulting glamour of being a hot-shot blogger.

The bad news: By participating in link exchanges, you risk injuring your reputation, the reputation of others, and angering Google. What do all successful bloggers have in common? Trust. A link might send new readers to your site but they are only going to keep reading your site if they trust that you will produce great content every week. The links on your blog are part of the content on your site; by linking to another site, you represent to your reader that the link is of good quality and will provide something valuable to the reader. If a reader clicks on a link that takes them to a site filled with ads for pills and dating programs, or to a blog that produces worse content than your own, the reader is going to question your judgment and wonder why you chose to link to that site. Nobody likes the guy who has to buy his friends. Unfortunately, by linking to one lousy site, you also devalue the other good sites on your blog. Bad for you, bad for your friends.

And, you certainly don’t want to irritate the most powerful player on the web. Google carries 71% of the search engine market and they hate link schemes. Google is in the business of providing the most accurate website hierarchy for a particular search term and falsely inflated links to a particular site lead to poor search results. In no less than three places in their Webmaster Guidelines, Google explains that participating in link schemes, including excessive link exchanges, could

Hi Darren,
Delighted to hear you are taking a vacation.
I wrote a posting on my site in June called ’small business owners impress your clients take a vacation’. In it I talked about putting vacation time in your time planner just like you do business appointments. It works for my family and I.

Also, just like you I wrote my articles ahead of time and scheduled them.

It is easy to blog at first. You have all that pent up desire, energy and ideas. Over time it becomes harder as you have greater amounts of material written it becomes harder to write and not become repetitive.

#3 is one of the best ways to overcome this issue. A well thought out plan for you blog will help a lot.

Solid points! Especially #3. Planning is huge.

As an extension to #5 – Don’t be afraid to take control of your comments.

A lot of my worst days are days are related to bad comments — random people attacking me or my opinions.

I used to keep all of those nasty comments up. I thought people would respect me for not censoring anyone. Then I realized that comments like those weren’t helping anyone. They made me feel terrible, and they also stifled conversation.

So I deleted them. Not only did it feel great, but it got conversations going again. Win-win.

This might not be an issue that beginners have right away. But it’s bound to happen — one day they’ll get a comment that makes them question why they put so much effort into blogging in the first place if they’re just going to be insulted by strangers. If a comment is bad enough that it makes you feel like giving up, delete it! Because some comments just aren’t worth keeping.

Great post Georgina,

These are important points to bear in mind when you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work required to create a successful blog.

When you begin a new blog the initial wave of energy allows you to produce three high-quality posts every day, but unless you can sustain that pace over the long-term it’s counter-productive as it sets the expectation of your readers artificially high.

I also agree with Joshua that it’s important to blog when you have something of genuine value to share with your readers. If you focus on your blogging schedule to the exclusion of your core blogging message, there’s a risk of turning something you love into a chore. Poor quality grudge posts don’t provide value for anyone.

One of the chief driving forces behind my blog is to provide valuable information to help other people achieve their online goals.

Another way that I motivate myself to keep blogging is to view the stats as a game. I love testing things to see what works and doesn’t work to improve my blog stats.

5 Clever Ways to Make A Sticky Blog

.

It worked. Even today people religiously visit Facebook and get lost in a trance for hours at a time.

You want to create something similar for your blog

5 Ways to Stick Your Readers to Your Blog Like Glue#1: Interlinked Posts

As you write, look for opportunities to link to other posts that add value to your current topic. Go ahead and note these posts in your editorial calendar along with the topic you are planning to write. Be frugal with these links, only pick one or two of your most relevant posts; too many links can become a distraction (and obnoxious).

#2: Tell the Story in Different Ways

People learn in different ways. Up to this point, blogging has favored visual learners who like reading and viewing charts. Now you can use video and audio to create a great experience for your auditory learners too.

It’s simple to read your post and offer as a podcast, or turn your post’s main points into a PowerPoint slide and offer it as video. You can take this one step further by adding a video commentary or introduction to your post.

The point is to appeal to your reader in the way that gets them to

If you come up with a killer idea for a post and decide to save it for when your blog has a larger audience, that’s a mistake. How to Outsource Your Blog… Or Part of It

Hi Georgina,

This is great information, but for a beginning blogger, they may not have much money to spend on designers, contractors and such. Thanks for the great information.

Hi Georgina,
That is an excellent article you wrote. I have bookmarkedi it.

Personally, I believe the decision to outsource comes as part of your long term business planning. I sense blogs like yours and Darren’s succeed because there is a plan in place and any outsourcing comes about when you have reached a certain level of development.

I will add the choice of what to outsource comes down to your current skill set. Your decision to outsource can be linked directly to actions you not only have a lack of time to complete but you also have little interest in learning how to do.

I agree with you and Joshua (who commented above) that it is extremely important to verify the credibility and ability of who you outsource to.

If you or other readers are interested I wrote a short article on the process of how to choose what you delegate and the article is located at http://growyourwellnessbiz.com/business-development-decide-delegate-defer-delete/

Blogosphere Trends + Encouraging Comments

Lesson: As Darren pointed out in his excellent 2006 post on comments, one way to encourage comments is to write open-ended posts that leave room for readers to provide extra information and expertise. This example provides one side of the story, allowing readers to add detail or jump in with opinions and facts that support the other side of the argument. Being thorough but not too thorough tempts readers to fill in the gaps.

1 Easy Solution to 3 Big Blogging Problems

they’re obviously dedicated to blogging success and might like the idea of getting a blogging buddy too. Or seek out like-minded bloggers on sites like Twitter, LinkedIn or Brazen Careerist.

If you another blogger leaves a comment on your blog go back and leave a comment on their blog. With luck the blogging buddy relationship will grow naturally from that. If you find a friend who doesn’t have a blog but wants to support you with yours I recommend you help another budding blogger by commenting on their blog. Giving something back to other people really does make you feel happier in yourself. I love leaving comments on other people’s blogs and it’s a great way to start networking with people.

The more blogging buddies you can get in the beginning the better. You can tide each other over until you really do build up a good community of readers who care about what you write and leave you comments.

Have fun finding a blogging buddy. I hope they’ll be as enthusiastic and supportive in their role as Teresa was and that you’ll be able return the favor. I’ve got a few blogging buddies now and I’m still trying to get Teresa to start her own blog and share her writing with the world. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to kick start her blogging journey as she did mine.

What do you think? Would you like a blogging buddy or have you already got one? If you haven’t, check out some of the other commenters’ blogs and leave them a comment. You never know, it could be the start of a beautiful blogging relationship and a long-lasting, successful blog.

This is a great list to be aware of. However, I think most of the blogs I read attached to a business are more likely to impress me than turn me off. A well kept-up business blog can be a true asset, and nowadays I want to know a business is using social media. Otherwise, they seem like a dino to me.

Marlon

In the current era, a blog is a must-have for business owners. The traditional websites (most of them are still static) are no longer as effective as they used to be. Business websites does not only serve as a “front” anymore. The function of a site goes beyond the traditional “product presentation”. More than a presentation tool, a website is now considered a “communication tool”. Here comes the need for a blog. Blog can bring them the much needed traffic. The more these companies communicate, the more likely they can get leads for their businesses.

These 5 tips can be used as elements for benchmarking. Nice post!

What also made this post popular stand out, is that mainstream media wasn’t giving it the attention that the American people thought it should. Now touching on the subject of race, I received a hundreds of racist insults. Expect to get verbally abused when taking a strong stance on many subjects; especially touchy subjects that cover sensitive issues such as race. Just log out of Foursquare and Facebook Places before hitting the check-in button while you watch your 3-year old impersonate a Oreos commercial eating cookies in your house. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

3. Infographics

Infographics are visual representations of an outline of information. The graphic typically constitutes a skyscraper and rectangular image that is 500 pixels or wider. Inside the infographic, you can see factoids represented by smaller images. The smaller images can constitute pictures, graphs, and/or any other imagery associated with the information its representing.

Infographics can get tough to do if you don’t have a graphic designer. However, beyond the sparkling quality of the color and resolution of the images, the information conveyed in the infographic is what will determine its viral success. I put up a simple infographic on what other items could be bought with the money put into a Super Bowl ad and drove over 50,000 views to the Adfreak blog in a few hours.
